This is the intermediate level programme of a three-tier competence-based qualification in the maintenance and management of hydraulic systems. It combines the necessary knowledge and skills base to ensure competency may be assessed successfully when working with hydraulic equipment and systems.
The level 2 standalone vocational course involves the completion of the knowledge based units alongside practical classroom tasks and exercises.Those candidates who prefer to work towards the competence based qualification will be required to complete a written exam and a number of one to one practical tasks.
On successful achievement of this level, a candidate may wish to attain a higher-level complementary qualification in line with their personal career goals.

Basic principles and circuit configuration
The cause and effect of pressure generation, pressure losses, heat generation, fluid leakage, cavitation, aeration, noise and vibration
Candidates must know the basic building blocks of a typical industrial hydraulic machine and be able to describe their purpose and effect upon machine performance
Hydraulic system components
- Flow control devices, fixed, and adjustable
- Pressure and temperature compensated flow control devices
- Flow dividers – spool, rotary
- Directional control devices and methods of control (including proportional control)
Hydraulic pumps and associated control systems
Candidates must be able to describe the function and
operation of hydraulic pumps and listed control systems, plus set up procedures as prescribed
Hydraulic actuators
Candidates must be able to describe function and operation of hydraulic actuators
Hydraulic circuitry and control features
Candidates must be able to interpret listed circuitry and associated drive systems and recognise graphical symbols in current use
Maintenance, system condition monitoring and faultfinding procedures
Candidates must be able to describe fault finding procedures
Hydraulic reservoirs and associated auxiliary equipment
Candidates must be able to describe the function of a
reservoir and associated fluid conditioning equipment and auxiliary components
Contamination Control
- Types and origins of contamination control
- Cleanliness targets – achieving and maintaining
- Monitoring fluid condition (sampling and measurement)
- Preventive/correction actions
- Filter performance and ratings
- Filter types
- Locations and performance
- Know what is contained within an oil analysis report
Health & Safety
- The importance of personal protection associated with the working environment
- The importance of following safe isolation procedures
- The hazards of trapped pressure and stored energy such as within accumulators and how to deal with it
- The hazards associated with hydraulic oil leakage and how to deal with it
- The effects of oil injection injuries and the immediate actions to be taken
- The procedures to follow before starting work on any hydraulic system
Hydraulic accumulators
- The common procedures for accumulator inspection and maintenance
- How to check the nitrogen pre-charge of an accumulator against the system specifications
- Safe working practices when working with accumulators including the dangers associated with compressed gas
